About Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and most effective and alternative forms of medicine there is today. It has been practiced in China for over 3000 years, and still widely used throughout the world today. TCM has a much different approach to treating disorders, compared to that of western medicine. TCM looks at the whole body, while focusing on treating the root of the problem not just the branch.

There are natural pathways/channels in our bodies, and much like the city streets and highways they need to keep moving freely. When injuries, emotions, stress or poor lifestyle choices are left untreated they disrupt the natural flow throughout the body (same idea as an accident blocking the street/highway) disrupting the natural flow throughout our body, causing many types of disorders and pain. A practitioner will insert a stainless steel acupuncture needle the size of a hair into the selected acupoints to aid in releasing the blockage in the channels and therefore, promoting the natural healing of our body.

Acupuncture can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other helpful modalities such as Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping, auricular and diet therapy. Acupuncture can effectively relieve stress, increase energy, lower blood pressure, reduce pain, aid in digestion, weight loss, insomnia and help balance the hormones; therefore it can effectively treat a wide variety of women’s health issues such as menopausal and fertility issues. Because of it immune strengthening and regulating function, it is often used to treat allergies and a very effective way to support cancer treatments. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is the main source of treatment for stroke recovery or nerve damage caused by an accident or surgeries in China.

Acupuncture is a safe, natural and pain free procedure, it has been proven effective and there are no side effects.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and most effective and alternative forms of medicine there is today. It has been practiced in China for over 3000 years, and still widely used throughout the world today. TCM has a much different approach to treating disorders, compared to that of western medicine. TCM looks at the whole body, while focusing on treating the root of the problem not just the branch.

What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal therapy is a component of TCM with the advantage of being able to treat diseases with natural ingredients and minimal side effects. Because Chinese herbs are like food, they slowly change your body condition to improve your overall health; therefore, the herbal treatment may need more time to change your situation but has a long standing effect.

Can it be used with other medications?

Chinese herbs can be used in conjunction with western medicines to treat diseases. Herbs can strengthen the effectiveness and reduce side effects of western medicine. In some cases, the use of Chinese herbs has a superior effect over western medicines, and can contribute to the overall health and quality of life in some illnesses that have been declared incurable.

Much like acupuncture, herbal prescriptions are customized to suit the individual’s needs, by adding or subtracting a herb, and/or modifying the dosage of a herb(s) in the original formula.

What can Chinese herbal medicine be used for?

Chinese herbal medicine is great at treating acute diseases and is able to kill bad bacteria and/or viruses like your common colds and flus. It can treat chronic illness and conditions like pain, allergies, low immune system, respiratory issues, infertility, impotence, weight loss, digestion disorders, diabetes, menopause, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, depression, infections, insomnia and much more. Herbal formulas are much gentler and safer for our bodies because they are made of natural products, including bark, flowers, seeds, roots, leaves, minerals, fruits, and even the odd bug; by strengthening our body, helping it to recover and maintaining good health by keeping the body balanced!  Individuals seeking an alternative approach to regain their health are turning to Chinese herbal medicine because it has a 5000 year track record of success.

Is it safe?

As mentioned above, most of the herbs have no side effects, and can be used in conjunction with western medical treatment plans. A TCM practitioner does not prescribe you a single herb for the treatment of a disease. Most herbal formulas consist of 8-15 different herbs with different doses. There are certain conditions that require extra caution when prescribing herbal formulas. For eg. there are certain herbs/formulas that a practitioner may avoid during pregnancy, because it would be considered to moving, however, there are a number of other herbal formulas that are completely safe to take during pregnancy.

ABOUT

Dr. Cindy Grainger DTCM, R. Ac

Cindy is a Registered Acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist practicing in Sundre and Olds Alberta.  Cindy attended the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Calgary AB where she graduated with a double major and at the top of her class, all while raising a young family. Cindy has gained valuable knowledge in a wide array of health disorders through her hands on experience in a busy student clinic, as well as volunteering at all of the offsite student clinics offered including the Drop In Centre and The Abbeydale. She was also one of the very few chosen to work with Western Medical Doctors as an acupuncturist on a government pilot project at The Alex Medical Centre in Calgary.

Cindy has had experience in dealing with all avenues of women’s health, digestive disorders, pain management, emotional imbalances, severe fatigue, autoimmune diseases, colds and flus but is not limiting her-self to any one specific avenue. Cindy feels that it is important, especially living in a remote area to be a diversified practitioner; this enables her to be continually challenged at the highest levels.

The physiology of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is simple: “treat the root of the problem, not just the branch (symptom)”. Cindy is a firm believer that if we actually take the time to hear what our bodies are trying to tell us and listened we would be a much healthier society. A combination of acupuncture and herbs along with lifestyle and dietary recommendations are used together to achieve optimal health.

One of Cindy’s goals is to educate the public on what good health actually is and how to maintain it, which varies greatly from person to person. She has seen way too often people become complacent with even the slightest of health issues, accepting this as a normal part of aging.

Cindy spent most of her childhood on the back of a horse, and continued to compete and train barrel horses in her adult years. Aside from her passion and love for horses, she enjoys being active, spending quality time with her three boys in between their busy sports schedules.

Cindy is committed to advancing her education throughout the upcoming years, in order to broaden her knowledge and skills in order to continue to assist what ails the individuals.

Helping people one needle at a time.
